Are you looking to take a financial time-out? If so, it may be time to take a “no spend weekend.” The idea behind a no-spend weekend is pretty simple. For just a few days, you occupy yourself with fun things to do that cost nothing. It’s a great way to save money and challenge the whole family to see if you can do it together! Remember, no-spend weekends do not mean no-FUN weekends. Far from it, actually. You may find that some of the weekends you spend no money at all are some of your best weekends. If you are looking to try your first ever no-spend weekend, here is a list of some fun things you can do without spending a dime:
Go through your old stuff
Get rid of all the extra stuff you don’t need that’s just taking up space in your closet or garage. You’ll be organizing, thinning out, and helping others without spending a dime. Donate to goodwill or hold a garage sale.
Get creative with the ingredients left in the pantry
Take stock of the items in your pantry that are expiring soon or that are left over. You can put a new twist on your old favorite recipes by using different ingredients or do some googling and discover a new favorite! You’ll be surprised by what new combinations you’ll come up with!
Game Night/Movie Night
If your local family members only get together for holidays or birthdays, this is an easy way to bring everyone closer together without a special occasion. Use this opportunity to spend time with friends without spending money on a night out.
Go to the library
Another fun, free activity is visiting your local library. When was the last time you went to the library? Go find some awesome books and learn something new. If you don’t want something quite so “academic,” go to your local bookstore instead and peruse the shelves.
Go camping in the backyard or family room.
Do you own a tent? If so, go camping in the backyard or family room or built a fort out of pillows, comforters and sheets.
Rearrange one of your rooms
After you’ve purged some unwanted stuff from your home, you may have some free space. Read up on feng sui and start moving around furniture, picture frames etc. to give a room a refresh. You could even color code your bookshelf or read up on Marie Kondo’s tips for de-cluttering your life.
