Clear Out the Kitchen Cupboards

Re-stock all your staples – flour, sugar, condiments and tinned goods – but as you do so clear out all the items you know you aren’t going to use until next Christmas. The New Year is not the time to be hoarding half-opened jars of cranberry sauce or mincemeat so use it up now or lose it. You could get creative with the leftover ingredients or donate the unopened items to a food pantry.

Use What You Have Before Buying More

Make sure to take stock of toiletries, cleaning materials and other household staples before you go shopping for more this year. Too many of the same item creates chaos in your cupboards, and creates unnecessary costs. Use the last few pumps of lotion, the last drops of olive oil, the last five envelopes you own, the last bit of toothpaste, et cetera. With just this one habit change, you’ll waste less, consume less, and bring less clutter to your home.

Safety First

Start the year off on the right foot by making sure you and your family members will be safe in the unlikely event of an emergency. Test your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and replace batteries as necessary. You should also make sure you have a fire extinguisher in the kitchen and that it is in proper working order.

Get Your Place Ready For Entertaining

Each year most of us vow to spend more time with family and friends. Why not give your home a little update so you are more likely to invite people over? One easy update that makes your home seem more “finished” is adding plants or beautiful flower arrangements. They bring in new energy and help clear the air.  Picking out a new accent color from the existing decor can make the whole room seem fresh. A colorful rug or runner can also help anchor your space. Lastly, rearrange your furniture so it is oriented in conversation groups rather than facing the television.

Donate What You Can

If you are the type to clean out your closets, garage and cabinets at this time of year, make sure you are donating not just throwing away.  It’s so important to donate, especially in the winter months when those in need can use your contributions the most. As you’re cleaning and purging, reconsider throwing out old, worn blankets or a slightly used coat and instead donate them to someone in need.
