How to Get Your Home Organized in a Week

Let’s face it, clutter is hard to keep contained and organized at all times. It’s even harder to clear the clutter when your home becomes unorganized with scattered possessions and papers. Cleaning and organizing your whole house may seem like a daunting task, but with some planning and motivation, you should be able to get your home organized within a week and keep it that way with these helpful tips!

1. Work Strategically
Don’t tackle the first project you can get your hands on. Instead, try to map out a plan of action in order to get your home organized. Having a bit of a schedule to go by will help you keep track of your progress and you’ll be able to visualize what you have already accomplished! Depending on how many rooms you have in your home, you’ll want to split up the work over the whole week like the example below:

  • Monday: Foyer & Entryway area
  • Tuesday: Dining & Living Room
  • Wednesday: Kitchen & other areas on first floor
  • Thursday: Bedrooms 1 & 2
  • Friday: Basement
  • Saturday: Owner’s Bedroom, Bathroom, & Closet
  • Sunday: Basic house cleaning

Once you’ve mapped out your game plan, you can take things a step further and write down actual objectives, notes, or tasks for each area you are cleaning. For example, if you start by cleaning your owner’s bedroom your list might look like this:

  • Gather all the clutter in your room and go through it
  • Empty out drawers, boxes, and closets and purge items that you no longer want or need. Place only items of value or use back inside.
  • Organize closet & dresser drawers
  • Complete a basic clean of the bedroom (i.e. dusting, vacuum floors etc.)

2. Purge the Clutter
In order to clear the clutter from your home, you’re going to have to throw some things away. When going through each room in your schedule, you’ll want to be very critical about the things you want to keep and the things you get rid of. Most of the time, homes become cluttered because there are too many items and not enough space. If you find yourself having trouble deciding what to keep and what to purge, ask yourself some of these questions:

  • Have you used the item in the past year?
  • Do you have a need for this item in the near future?
  • Will you ever use this item?
  • Does this item have any sentimental value?
  • Do you think you’ll regret getting rid of the item once it’s gone?

3. Begin Organizing Everything Neatly
Are you done going through everything and purging items? Then, it’s time to start putting thought in how you are going to organize what remains! Creating a system of how to keep things organized will help you now and in the future. There are so many ways to organize your items too! From baskets and drawer dividers to shelves and boxes, there are plenty of stylish space maker tools to keep things organized.

4. Keep Up with Chores
Once you clear the clutter, you’ll want it to keep it that way for a very long time. Some tidying up will be necessary to keep up the organization, so you’ll want to keep up with chores. If you have a family, get them involved to make the process easier on you and keep any future mess or clutter at bay!

5. Ask for Help
Organizing your whole home can be a daunting task, but that doesn’t mean you have to tackle it alone. If you have any supportive friends or family nearby that would be more than willing to help you, give them a call! Maybe your friends might be willing to assist you and help you through the purging process or maybe they can keep the kids entertained while you work. Either way, their helping hand should always be welcomed!

6. Keep it Consistent
Once all the clutter is cleared and you’ve organized your home, you’ll want to keep things consistently organized moving forward. If you find yourself having trouble getting motivated to clean, offer yourself an incentive to get it done! You could also have routine purging sessions or revisit problematic areas weekly in order to keep your home organized for future years to come!
