With autumn in full swing, you may be looking to spruce up your front porch to welcome your Thanksgiving guests later this month. While you may usually just plop out a pumpkin as your sole decoration, you may want to kick it up a notch this year. Make a first impression that will last with these creative porch decorating tips.
Creating a Focal Point
For many homes, the focal point is the front porch. Consider yourself lucky if you have a spacious one. However, you don’t need much space to make an impact. Instead of buying new things, head to your shed or garage and see if you have an old wagon, wheelbarrow or bushel basket sitting around. If so, place it on your porch and fill it with fall colors: from different colored mums to Indian corn, with various sizes of pumpkins and gourds spread around for good measure, says DIY Network. Use hay bales to stagger the height of your display, adding an extra touch of color to orange pumpkins by painting them bright colors of your choosing. You can make just as much of a statement by sticking with one color or shade, such as white. Sprinkle cinnamon sticks, pine cones, and acorns around your display for an extra wow factor.
Another way to add focus to your front porch is to use planters to display pumpkins, or even a terrarium made up of a bell jar and a shallow terra-cotta bulb dish. Incorporating natural elements like miniature pumpkins, pine cones, Spanish moss and leaves, you can really make your display stand out.
Add Pops of Color
Looking to mix autumn with relaxation? If your front porch is big enough, add some dark wicker furniture complemented with rust-colored padding and brown fall-inspired throw blankets and pillows. Add some whimsy to the look by stringing orange outdoor lights for an added accent. Don’t assume twinkling lights are only for Christmas. Give your yard a little illumination while showing off your fun side at the same time.
Create Symmetry
The haphazard look is so 2015. This year, it’s all about symmetry. Flank your front door with equal décor on either side. Symmetrical displays even out the look, drawing the eye toward the focal point, which is the porch itself or even the front door. Speaking of front doors, instead of the standard cranberry and pine cone wreathe, try a potato sack filled with brilliant yellow seasonal flowers, as seen here in Good Housekeeping.
