While some of us can sleep anywhere at any time, from a car ride to an airplane ride, most of us need ideal conditions in which to sleep. A poll taken by the National Sleep Foundation says that 73% of Americans rated a dark room as important to getting a good night’s sleep. Let’s go over some tips for creating that just-right atmosphere for a quality rest.
Room Design
It’s all about the design and positioning of things in your room. Because your room is your sanctuary, it should bring a feeling of calm, peace and serenity when you enter it. The first step to a restful night is creating a relaxing sleep environment. That starts by having a neat and orderly room. Get out all the clutter, which causes anxiety and stress – two things you DON’T want when trying to sleep. Your furniture arrangement should flow naturally so as to encourage relaxation and continuity of form. Choose calming colors that ease your body, mind and spirit.
Keep computers and TVs in another room, as digital devices can be prohibitive to sleep. Ninety-five percent of people say they use a computer, video game, TV or cell phone within an hour of bed. The lights from electronics can act as a stimulant, with the potential to disrupt sleep due to interrupted signals to the brain. In particular, the blue light given off from these devices is known to delay the release of melatonin, keeping you up way past your bedtime.
Room Darkening Shades
As night approaches, our body temperature falls while the hormone melatonin rises, telling us to become less alert and start the process for sleep. If light is seeping into your bedroom at night and in the early morning, you should invest in some room darkening shades. Early sun rays may prompt us to rise earlier than we usually would, which disrupts sleep as well. By keeping the room dark, you’re getting all the sleep your body naturally needs before you wake. If you do have to head to the bathroom in the middle of the night, use soft night lights to guide the way rather than flipping on harsh overheads.
The Right Bed
An uncomfortable bed with springs coming loose is a sure recipe for a disastrous night of sleep. Many mattress companies allow you to try a mattress out for 30 days. This is the best way to determine the best fit for you. When it comes to bedding, choose natural fibers in soothing colors, perhaps with cashmere throw if you get chilly. Use plenty of pillows for comfort, not just for your head but to support your body as well. Choose a hypoallergenic down comforter, especially if you’re prone to allergies.
